I downloaded some 3rd party stacks, but they don't have the regular stack icon, they look like plain folders.

This happens when the Finder doesn't know about the stack file type. It can happen when:

  • You don't have a recent version of RapidWeaver installed.
  • You don't have a recent version of Stacks installed.
  • RapidWeaver was just installed and has not been run on your computer.

To solve this, install the latest version of RapidWeaver and Stacks and run RapidWeaver.

A bit of background:
RapidWeaver files, RapidWeaver themes, and Stacks are all "bundle" files. In other words, they're folders that Mac OS X treats like a single file.  Mac OS X does this when an application teaches it about a specific type of file. In this case that application is RapidWeaver.  To get RapidWeaver to teach Mac OS X about stack bundles, you just have to install a recent version of RapidWeaver and then run it.
